Easter Feast

Picture this. The day was rainy and overcast, hardly what you would expect from an Easter weekend in Plett. The house seemed pale and quiet and, although Easter eggs and wishes were exchanged, the day didn’t seem to have a very festive feel.

Luckily, we had booked our Easter lunch at the Island Diner in the Beacon Island Lifestyle Resort. The restaurant has become known for their sumptuous seafood and grill house platters and we thought it would be a fun, family way to celebrate Easter.

Walking into the lobby of the hotel out of the dreary day, we were greeted with warmth and laughter, children skipping amongst the tables of diners enjoying a brunch in the cosy lobby. It might be cold outside, but it was warm in here!
We were welcomed and shown to our table in the Indigo Bay restaurant, which had already started to hum with eager lunchtime guests. Despite the weather conditions, the views of the Bay and Robberg were as magnificent as ever.
We had booked the Easter Platter for Two and my mouth waters just remembering it: The seafood was superb: creamy garlic mussels and crispy fried calamari. Tender and flavoursome prawns ready to be dipped and enjoyed. Flaky fresh line fish – grilled to perfection and, my absolute favourite, juicy Frango rump Espetada all complimented by a crisp green salad and fresh bread. In honour of the usual Easter chocolate overload, the dessert served was banofee meringues – absolutely delicious

The highlight of the day was he Easter egg hunt, arranged by the restaurant and held on the main lawn of the hotel. Children were running around helter skelter around the grounds, scrounging for their sweet treasures. Watching this enthusiastic hunt got me thinking about the origins of Easter eggs and Easter bunnies. So I did some research and, while the truth seems to be quite sketchy, I did find this lovely fable that I thought I would share:

“One winter day the goddess, Eostre was passing through a forest and found a bird dying in snow from hunger and cold. The goddess turned the bird into a hare (rabbit) because they have a warm fur and can find food more easily than any bird. And so our bunny survived the winter and when the spring came the animal started laying eggs because it was once a bird. The rabbit then decorated every egg leaving it to Eostre as a sign of gratitude.”

All in all, it was a wonderful, busy day filled with the Island Diner staples of laughter, good value, wonderful food and magnificent views!

Indigo Bay Greek Evening

When I think of a Greek celebration, I imagine musicians moving around a circle of dancers, smiling faces raising their glasses for a toast and, of course, Mediterranean food.

This past week, Indigo Bay at the Beacon Island Lifestyle Resort hosted a Greek evening filled with music, wine and excellent food. The evening was headlined by the musical brothers, Nico and Peter and they set the tone perfectly for a great night!

We arrived at the restaurant just before sunset; the music was already playing and the room filling up with eager patrons. Our table offered panoramic views of the ocean and waves crashing on the rocks below. We enjoyed our first drinks as the sun slipped below the horizon, colouring the ocean, mountains and sky.

I couldn't help smiling as I looked across the vibrant restaurant; the music, lighting and ambience blending perfectly with the hub of laughter and conversation. It looked and felt like a celebration. And it was: a celebration of family, of good food, music and wine.

Our first course was a Mezze Platter (a selection of Greek dips served with warm pita bread). I love this style of eating - a sample of this and that whilst enjoying a glass of wine and a good laugh. The authentic Greek flavours of chickpea, cucumber and herbs complimented the wine and our table sat in silence for a moment, looking out over the bay as the sun set. The dishes that caught my eye included sizzling steaks, plates piled with prawns and I was very nearly persuaded by a juicy beef espetada. Tempting dishes of ribs, chicken and fish served with fresh veg, rice or chips moved past our table and the decision of what to order was much debated!

In keeping with the Mediterranean theme, we decided on a Seafood Platter. Indigo Bay is a seafood and steakhouse specialising in fresh fish and quality food. The menu boasts a variety of platters including seafood, meat and a combination of both. Our platter was served for the table: prawns, fresh line fish, grilled calamari, baby squid and mussels served in a light lemon-butter sauce with chips, rice and vegetables. The flavours of the sea took centre stage and the food was cooked beautifully, tender and tasty.

While we enjoyed our meal, the music began to take on a new tone, Greek and Mediterranean songs with a festive tempo. The restaurant staff moved about their work while swaying to the beat and diners clapped their hands in time. A couple of patrons moved onto the dance floor to delight in the unique rhythm. The atmosphere was one of relaxed enjoyment; people enjoying each other's company, enjoying their meal and the music.

Indigo Bay's Greek evening was delightful and encompassed everything good about dining out in Plettenberg Bay: quality food prepared with care, conversation, music and wine - all with the Best Views in Plett!

The gift of Christmas lunch

If you thought a white Christmas was the ideal, think again! As temperatures in many countries across the globe continued to drop, Christmas lunch in sunny South Africa was truly blissful. Hats off to the chefs and staff at the Island Diner, making the day a complete success for many families.

Christmas lunch can be very stressful, especially when you have a big family. There’s plenty to cook, to prepare and to clean. This year, the Island Diner simplified matters for many families, offering a Christmas lunch buffet inside Indigo Bay.

There were two sittings, the first from 12h00 to 14h00. One hundred and thirty people were wined and dined to the point of pleasurable satiety in the first seating. After their meal, some families happily moved outside to allow the restaurant to be prepared for the second sitting. “That was really nice,” said a man with a British accent, while he and another couple enjoyed a Patron Tequila in the afternoon sun. “When ever you order online you never know, but today was lovely” he continued.

Inside, the waitrons speedily rearranged the restaurant, reset tables and set the food out. With the garnishes and finishing touches in place the next group of over a hundred people arrived. Within minutes- crackers shot off across the restaurant and champagne bottles were opened to celebrate Christmas with loving family members. In the corner of the room, the music began to play as customers made their way to the buffet.

From the eldest to the youngest, there was a dish that pleased everyone. The Christmas buffet menu offered a variety of assorted salads, meats, bakes, vegetables and desserts. One boy was happy piling his plate with heaped spoons of rice. He then returned for another helping twice the size of the first. By the time he made his way to the dessert table, he glanced at the table with cautionary eyes. After eyeballing the ice cream- one eye open, the other closed- he dished heaps into a bowl and walked back to his family smiling as he sat down.

Overall people were very happy and were able to celebrate Christmas sticking to the tradition that Christmas time is a time to share with family, to enjoy each other’s company and count their blessings. Fussing about the cooking and cleaning was not an option for these folk.

A couple sharing Christmas together said they were happy spending Christmas alone together and that they would have Christmas lunch at Indigo Bay again in the future. “It was very nice, especially with the view. It’s very relaxing” said another woman sitting at a table next to the window.

Here’s to Christmas, celebrating the gift of life and gift of good food!
